PRESENTATION

Schools arrived at Wagon Lane early to prepare teams for the Aire Valley SSP Mixed Tag Rugby Final. The weather was perfect for what was to be a fantastic showcase of tag rugby.

All games started vibrantly with offensive play in mind. Teams passed the ball well and took opportunities to sprint into open spaces that were presented. Parents and spectators witnessed a competitive atmosphere with high quality movement, speed and agility.

There were some very promising young rugby players who performed to a very high standard. As games went by teams learned how to defend resolutely by adopting a high flat line and grabbing the tags early.

It was Baildon A who led the way by scoring 4 tries in the first game to beat Crossflatts B 4 – 0. Crossflatts A halted the Baildon charge with a 3 – 3 draw and Eldwick took the opportunity to stake their claim on the title by beating St Cuthberts 4 – 2.

Baildon, Eldwick and Crossflatts all won their third games so things were really building up for a fantastic climax.

St Cuthberts stopped Crossflatts in their tracks by overcoming them 3 tries to 2. At the same time Crossflatts B were trying to do their classmates a favour by drawing 3 – 3 with Eldwick. The Baildon A winning run continued by defeating schoolmates Baildon B 4 – 2.

Going into the final game it was neck and neck at the top with Baildon and Eldwick both on 10 points and having to play each other for the title.

The game was electric with end to end tries scored but it was Baildon who ran out victorious winning the game 4 – 3 and were crowned the Aire Valley SSP Yr 6 Mixed Tag Rugby Champions.

Congratulations to all that took part. Participants played extremely well and through this experience developed their knowledge of the game and skills as players.
