Hazelbeck

Special Schools Festivals

KS4 Students from Hazelbeck and Southfield schools enjoyed a Tag Rugby festival at Manningham Sports Centre on Tuesday 8th February. Many thanks go to Neil Spence and Dave Duxbury who provided the coaching.

The students learnt new skills and played in a tournament which ended in a draw.

28 Chellow Heights students took part in a multi-skills festival on Tuesday 15th February. The students had a fantastic time and enjoyed the morning. Thanks go to Richard Taylor who provided the coaching.

Young Leaders visit to Headingley:

On Tuesday 14th September 2 young leaders went to Headingley Cricket ground to participate in 'A day in the life of Headingley'. This was an opportunity to see how the ground works on a county cricket match day including meeting players, talking to the groundsmen, security, press box and a tour of the ground.

Yorkshire were playing Kent in the last fixture of the season and it was a fantastic opportunity to see professional cricketers playing. Johnny Bairstow hit 67 runs!! Following on from this, the boys will have the opportunity to do voluntary work with the YCB.

On 15th September the first of the Bradford and Keighley special schools festivals took place at Manningham Sports Centre. 30 students took part in a basketball festival of skills and games coached by Steve Farleigh and Mark Gunn. Every student received a medal and certificate.

On 21 September we were back at Headingley this time for a West Yorkshire disability cricket festival. Hazelbeck sent a 10 strong KS3 squad to join in the skills practices and tournament. Due to the rain we could not play on the pitch but used the indoor facilities instead. Out of 6 teams Hazelbeck came fourth along with wonderful memories and a great goody bag!!

Many thanks to Steve Archer who provided coaching in school and we hope for more cricketing opportunities to come our way.

Head Teacher Welcome:

In December 2006 and January 2007 the new schools name was developed following consultation with all current special schools (staff and students) and the name Hazelbeck was one of several proposed.

The Governors were able to make a shortlist of five suitable names with Hazelbeck being selected by an overwhelming number of votes submitted by the current special school communities, members of Beckfoot School community BMDC Councillors, staff assimilated at that point in time to the new school and professionals from partner agencies. The name Hazelbeck School, suggested by the community of Chapel Grange School, was formally adopted in January 2007.

Over the past few months the logo for the new school has now been developed with help from governors of Hazelbeck School, staff and pupils of current special schools and a professional design company.

These two activities, choosing a school name and a logo, have begun to breathe life into the new school, and together with the vision for Hazelbeck School are setting the way in which I wish to see the school develop as a vibrant, inclusive school community where all are valued and are able to succeed. I will leave you with the vision statement for the school, and an invitation to contribute your thoughts and ideas to the development of the new school by contacting me either via email: susanmaygill@yahoo.co.uk or at Beckfoot School.

"Hazelbeck School will provide a quality educational experience designed to develop the abilities of individual pupils in a safe, caring, and happy inclusive co-located learning environment."

Many thanks for taking the time to read our web pages,
