Bikeability Training On Offer to All Schools!

Bikeability is the Cycling Proficiency Test for the 21st century, designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today’s roads. Since spring 2007, more than 150,000 extra young people have had the opportunity to get their Bikeability level 2 Award from Cycling England funding.

To get their Bikeability Award, children (and adults) are taught how to ride their bikes to the Government approved National Standard for Cycle Training, which sets out the training and skills essential for making cycling trips in today’s road conditions. By establishing a National Standard, the Government has set out a nationwide uniform programme of formal training which will reassure parents that young people wanting to cycle have been instructed in the essential skills and procedures wherever they may live in England.

The aim of Bikeability is to increase the numbers of young people in school years 5, 6 and 7 (and in some circumstances other year groups will be considered) to receive quality cycle training by qualified instructors, and by July 2010 ensure that another 100,000 young people across 200 SSPs will have passed their Bikeability level 2 Award.

The vision for Bikeability is to extend and establish a sustainable framework which, through the funding provided, will support SSPs to:

Manage and co-ordinate the delivery of Bikeability across the SSP (beyond the initial year)

Ensure delivery of the Bikeability Level 2 course to young people

Create a Bikeability team of instructors and assistant insturctors to be deployed to support local delivery

Develop ongoing cycling opportunities for young people through local school, community and club provision.

What are the Bikeability levels:

1. Completing Level 1, you will be able to demonstrate the skills and understanding to be able to make a trip and undertake activities safely in a motor traffic free environment.

2. Completing Level 2, you will be able to demonstrate the skills and understanding to be able to make a trip safely to school, work or leisure on quiet roads.

3. Completing Level 3, you will be able demonstrate the skills and understanding to be able to make a trip safely to school, work or leisure on busy roads and using complex junctions and road features.

Young people will be encouraged and inspired to achieve all three levels, recognising that there is always more to learn and to enjoy on a bike.
